Coloring pages can be great fun for kids, especially if the pages feature the child's favorite animals, flowers, or animated characters. There are plenty of free coloring pages online, so you should never have to pay to download these images. All you need to do is conduct an online search for the type of pages your child likes, then print them out with a few simple steps.

  1. 1

Look for "coloring pages with animals" for giraffes, elephants, or zebras. Kids can either recreate the colors and patterns of animals they've seen at a zoo, or they can imaginatively think up new shades and patterns to color the animals. Don't worry if your child colors in the animal figures in a way that doesn't seem realistic. Kids can sometimes make "incorrect" or weird coloring choices, but they often have their own reasons for doing so.[1]

    • The Just Color site has plenty of animal coloring pages at: https://www.justcolor.net/kids/.
  2. 2

Search for "fantasy coloring pages" for pictures of dragons and more! If your child likes knights, dragons, princesses, and castles, they'll probably enjoy coloring images of fantasy creatures. Sites that feature fantasy coloring pages will also often feature images of mythological characters or some more realistic historical buildings and settings.

    • For example, the Coloring.ws website features a large number of fantasy coloring pages. View them at: http://www.coloring.ws/fantasy.htm.
  3. 3

Retrieve pictures of superheroes if your kids like these characters. Try a search for "DC comic superhero coloring pages" or "Marvel hero coloring sheets." Kids will love coloring in images of their favorite heroes including Wonder Woman, Spiderman, Batman, the Green Lantern, Black Widow, and the Hulk. If they want to color a picture of one of these characters specifically, search for, for example, "Incredible Hulk coloring pages."

    • Find some stylized images at: http://getcolorings.com/childrens-superhero-coloring-pages.
    • Many websites will also have coloring sheets of made-up superheroes if your child isn't interested in well-known characters. For example, find some at: https://www.thecolor.com/Category/Coloring/Superheroes.aspx.
  4. 4

Search for pictures of flowers and trees if your child likes nature. Search for something like "outdoors children's coloring pictures." These kinds of pictures can spark children's imaginations by letting them soak up knowledge of how the natural world is structured.[2] You'll find images that are stylized or cartoony and others that are more realistic. Older kids may prefer coloring realistic pictures of flora.

    • If your child would like to color pictures of the changing seasons, you could search for pictures of leaves, snow, or budding trees. The Crayola website features a number of free seasonal coloring pages. Find out more at: http://www.crayola.com/free-coloring-pages/seasons/.
    • Fisher-Price also has a large online selection of free seasonal coloring pages. See them at: http://play.fisher-price.com/en_US/GamesandActivities/ColoringPages/index.html.

Browse for pictures of characters from popular animated movies. Try searching for something like "recent Disney movie coloring pictures" or "Pixar character coloring pages." Kids like coloring this type of picture, since the characters are instantly recognizable.

    • For example, check out the Hello Kids website at: http://www.hellokids.com/r_3/coloring-pages.
    • For images from slightly older animated movies like Aladdin or Bambi, check out the Coloring Book page at: http://www.coloring-book.info/coloring/.
  1. 1

Save the image if you'd like to print it again in the future. In this case, right click on the image and click on "Save as." This will bring up a window that allows you to select a location on your computer to save the picture. Choose the target location and type in a name for the picture. For example, call it something like "Santa Claus coloring picture."[3]

    • If you download and save several images at once, you won't have to repeat the entire process the next time your child wants an image to color. You can just print one of the already-downloaded images.
  2. 2

Open the image and select "print" to print out the coloring page. When you click on "print," the computer will bring up a menu page allowing you to select a printer and choose how many copies of the image you'd like to print. Once you've made the selections, click the "print" button to print the picture.

    • If you decide not to save the image, you can just right-click on the picture online and then click on "print."
  3. 3

Print the page in grayscale to make sure your child can color it. Printing in grayscale ensures that the image will be in black and white. Once you've clicked "print" and the resultant menu pops up, look for a "grayscale" option.[4] If it's not immediately apparent, you'll need to do a little digging.

    • You'll most likely find the grayscale option in the printing menu under "Color" or "Settings."
  4. 4

Print the image as a full page to give your child plenty of space to color. If you're given the option to choose what size the image will be printed as, select "full page." Click "print" again to print out the picture.

    • Large images will be easier and more fun for your child to color in.
