Mushroom-essny

My pet bird, Sweetie Pie, recently acquired a new nickname: Little Mushroom. I have no idea how it came to be, other than it just is. He certainly doesn't look like a mushroom and he doesn't eat mushrooms. The whole thing got me wondering, just how many food nicknames are there? Some terms of endearment that come immediately to mind include honey (buns), cookie, sweet pea, sugar, babycakes, and pumpkin. And I can't forget this classic from high school French: mon petit chou (my little cabbage).

What can you add to this list? Are there any that you currently use for loved ones?

Our oldest daughter is often 'Peanut', since she's a bit on the small size for her age.

My mom used to call me (and my sister) "little lambchop pie." I sometimes call my kitty "honey-cat" or "sweet potato" or "sweet potato pie."

There are very few people in my life who know that I answer to "Peanutty". "The Peanuttiest", if the loved one is feeling particularly affectionate.

Pumpkin, peanut, honey bunny, sugar, cookie and cupcake come to mind. Then there's hambone, buckwheat, sprout, hot tamale, and of course, Mr. Bean.

My dog seems to generate about 10 new nicknames a day. One food one is Sugarplum, which could easily be her real name. She also gets Chunky Monkey, which gets the food nod because of the ice cream flavor. She would say to you that all of this food talk is making her hungry and she needs more snacks.

My son's friend has a girlfriend he calls Cupcake. Now my son has nicknamed his new "friend" Cookie.
And I did go to college with a girl whose last name was English, so of course her nickname was Muffin.

My dad called me Shrubbie (the toddler pronunciation of Strawberry) when I was little. I couldn't pronounce Strawberry and it was my favorite food, so I was dubbed Shrubbie. I'm 29 now and he still calls me that sometimes.
And now, my husband and I have two dogs...one of which resembles nothing so much as a chicken nugget. Hence, we call her Nugget. Our other one is named Darla...which evolved into Darlala, and then Darlito and finally, Dorito. Odd....

My grandparents had 7 grandchildren but I was the only one with a nickname....Honeybun. In my Grandma's last days, she couldn't remember me except if I said "It's me, Honeybun".

My dog is black and my friend's dog is white so I call them salt & pepper when they're together because they're never more than a foot away from each other.

My niece, Hanna, has always been Hanna Banana to me. Sometimes I just call her Nanners.

Oh, and I have a friend named Tater. But that's from his initials rather than a spud.

An Italian friend of mine from grad school once told me about a mayor in some town in Italy who called his wife or mistress his "pistacchieto" (Little Pistachio). I always thought that would be a cute nickname.

When my daughter was little her dad always called her Muffin. My son was little Schnootz- which my German girlfriend said was some sort of slang for a sweet- don't remember what.
